Official dimensions of a tenins court
- A tennis court has to have a rectangular form and a length of 23.77 metres (= 78 feet).
- A tennis court for singles matches has a width of 8.23 metres (= 27 feet), a tennis court for doubles matches has a width of 10.97 metres (= 36 feet).
Tennis net
- The tennis court is divided in two in the middle by a tennis net, which is attached to the two net posts by a cable.
- The height of the tennis net is 1.07 metres (= 3.5 feet) at the net posts and 0.91 metres (= 3 feet) in the middle. In the middle, the tennis net is dragged down by a bond, which is anchored into the court.
Net posts
- The tennis net has to be hung so it fills the entire empty space between the two net posts. The tennis net itself has to have fine meshes so the tennis ball can't go through the net while you're playing tennis.
- With a doubles tennis court, both tennis net posts have to be placed 0.91 metres (= 3 feet) outside of the doubles lines. For singles games where a 'singles' net is being used, both tennis net posts have to be placed 0.91 metres (= 3 feet) outside of the singles lines.
- When a tennis net for doubles is being used, the tennis net has to be supported by two singles posts at either side at a height of a 1.07 metres (= 3.5 feet), which both have to be placed 0.91 metres outside of the singles lines.
- The diameter of a tennis net post and a singles post, can't be any longer than 15.0 centimetres or 7.5 centimetres respectively, and both can't protrude more than 2.5 centimetres above the heighest part of the edge of the tennis net.
Tennis lines
- The last line on each side of the tennis court is called the baseline or the back line. The lines on the sides are called the sidelines. On both halves of the court is a service line, which is parallel to the tennis net and situates itself between the two sidelines of the singles court.
- The service line is located at 6.40 metres (= 21 feet) of the tennis net. The surface between the service line and the tennis net has to be divided in two equal parts on both sides of the tennis net. This way the service boxes are created.
- The baseline is divided in two by a mark in the middle of 10 centimetres (= 4 inches), which is drawn inside the playing field and parallel to the sidelines of the singles court.
- The middle service line and the middle mark have to be 5.0 centimetres (= 2 inches) wide. The other lines of the tennis court have to be between 2.5 (= 1 inch) and 5.0 centimetres (= 2 inches) wide. The baseline cannot be wider than 10 centimetres (= 4 inches).
- All the lines on the tennis court have to be in the same colour, which clearly contrasts with the rest of the playing field.
